Taylor Hicks Likely To Become The Next American Idol

The upset elimination of Chris Daughtry shocked fans and bettors who believed the North Carolina native was a shoe-in to become the fifth American Idol. Daughtry became the favorite with bettors at BetCRIS Sportsbook, one of the first companies to open wagering on the reality show, after the 24 Idol finalists performed for the first time. Immediately following yesterday evening's elimination show, BetCRIS Sportsbook released updated odds on which of the three remaining contestants will become the next American Idol.
The largest sports betting site on the Internet, BetCRIS Sportsbook has received unprecedented interest in the latest edition of the hit reality show, with wagering already 20 times bigger than on the Oscars and expected to rival this year's NBA Finals. With his manic stage presence and Daughtry's elimination, Taylor Hicks has become the new favorite to win American Idol at 5/8 odds (i.e., win $5 for every $8 bet). Despite two mediocre weeks in a row, including a narrow escape last night, Katharine McPhee remains a solid Idol contender at 5/2 odds. BetCRIS Sportsbook remains skeptical of Elliott Yamin's chances and not only lists him as a 5/1 long shot to win the major recording contract, but has also made him the favorite to be next week's Idol casualty at 5/9.
"While somewhat unexpected, Chris' elimination didn't come as a complete surprise, as we dropped his odds significantly following his lackluster performance Tuesday night," said Simon Noble of Pinnacle Sports. "Meanwhile, Taylor appears to have hit a high note with Idol voters and the soul patrol through his consistently impressive performances and winning stage personality."

This Week in American Idol History: The Final Five

What do Neil Sedaka, Burt Bacharach, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller have in common? All of these songwriters were featured as part of American Idol final five competitions. We’ve also had Big Band, Top 40, and songs from the ‘60s, and there have been some real shockers during this round as well. Read on to find out who sang what, who went home, and what had us buzzin’ the morning after!

Looking back, there have been some great performances in this round of the competition. There have also been some stinkers. Seasons 2, 3, and 4 featured each finalist singing two songs each, and this will be repeated this year. Eliminations have been handled differently each season as well, so there’s no way to predict how they will do it this year. One thing for sure, this is going to be a nailbiter! Here’s how previous seasons’ top five shows have shaken out.

Season 4: This proved to be the most controversial week in Idol history. On the heels of Constantine’s shocking elimination, the Smoking Gun website broke the story of Bo’s arrest record. Fans speculated wildly as to whether or not this would disqualify him. Apparently, the producers were aware of his past and were satisfied that he had put all of this behind him.Idol fans were also dealing with the upcoming ABC exposé that promised to “reveal the truth” about the show.

On performance night, each Idol did two songs; one a Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller classic, and the other something from any of the Billboard Top 40 charts. Anthony sang “Poison Ivy” and “Incomplete,” while Scott did “On Broadway” and “Every Time You Go Away.” Vonzell sang “Treat Me Nice” and the Idol single, “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” (which reminds me… no single this year?). Carrie did “Trouble” and “Bless the Broken Road,” and Bo sang “Stand by Me” and Los Lobos’ “Heaven.” I loved Vonzell’s rendition of the Idol single and thought that Carrie’s “Broken Road” was superb. Of course, by then I was loving everything that Bo did!

On results night, the top five performed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (it was awesome), and the girls gave flowers to the judges and kissed Paula, who was definitely not having a good week! This was a great show of support for Paula, and felt right somehow. At the same time all of this was going on, ABC’s silly Primetime Live was airing. It turned out to be an hour of Corey Clark’s self-promotional BS and nothing more.

As nicey nice as the evening was, however, someone had to go home. Ryan got real tricky and sent Anthony and Scott to the couch. Scott pumped his arm triumphantly as Bo, Carrie, and Vonzell stood nervously onstage. Then Ryan announced that they were, in fact, the top three, and asked Anthony (whose birthday it was) and Scott to perform. In the end, Anthony got a nice birthday present when Ryan cleverly said, “Anthony, it’s bad news, buddy. We forgot to get you a birthday card, but we do have a gift… you are safe!” Scott Savol, who had survived the Smoking Gun and Vote for the Worst, was sent home.

After the Idol tour ended in September, Scott recorded nine songs in his home studio. He wasn’t satisfied with the results, though, and put the project on hold to try and find someone he could work with who understood his vision. He kept himself in the public eye by performing at various local events and selling karaoke machines on QVC. Now he’s returning to the studio to finish his album. Scott is also planning a summer wedding to his “long-time friend” Rochelle. He made this announcement on his website, and says, “We are planning a summer wedding and hope to be able to share some small part of our happy day with all of you.”

Season 3: Idol fans had an extra night of the show this season, with the “final five special” airing on Monday. Ryan did a sit-down interview with each finalist, and then they had a chance to sing their favorite song from the season to date. It was great. The week’s theme was Big Band. This was ironic considering that John Stevens was booted the week before, and would certainly have shone with this genre.

Fantasia and LaToya both had spectacular performances this night (Fantasia’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,” and LaToya’s “Too Close for Comfort” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”). George sang “Cheek to Cheek” and “What a Wonderful World,” and was also fabulous. Jasmine did “The Way You Look Tonight” and “It’s Almost Like Being in Love,” and Diana took on “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Come On, Get Happy.”

RNO recapper Sting7 wrote about Fantasia, “I sit here in front of you, a puddle of goo! ‘What Are You Doing’ was another star-making performance.” He was equally complimentary about LaToya, writing, “LaToya is just amazing! She was so classy, so comfortable, so sassy, so masterful. You could not take your eyes off her, and your ears were treated, too. LaToya has taken that bar and raised it again!”

American Idol: Say goodbye to Paris Bennett

Around about this time, the realization starts to set in for most people - ONE winner, four LOSERS. It’s not that this one is bad, it’s just that they all can’t win. And with that said, say goodbye to Paris Bennett.

With vastly more talent than Chicken Little, it was a given that she’d sail into this rarified air; but when we’re up here with the finalists, it’s pretty much inevitable that the low-hanging fruit is the cute little adolescent with the excellent voice but limited expertise.

In three years, perhaps, Paris could rule this contest without getting up in the morning. But right now, there’s simply no way she fits the mold of American Idol, so she’s gone eventually as a stone cold fact. Why this week? Because, it’s either the low-hanging fruit of the obvious or somebody who pretty much fills the bill.

Sure - somebody could screw up monumentally. I don’t claim to be psychic. But, seems to me we’ve got a few archetypes that’ll have to knock-down drag out between niches, and that leaves Paris out in the cold.

Chris - Has the rocker vote, and (with the exit of Keith Partridge) most of the women vote as well.

Taylor - Has the indie vote along with the remainder of the women.

Katharine - Has the horney man-boy vote.

Elliott - Has the old folks who tune in from reruns of “The Lawrence Welk Show” to hear the nice boy sing a pretty tune.

Paris, on the other hand, simply doesn’t have an identity beyond “that cute little kid.” “Oooh - look - she dressed up all country for country day!” “Look at that dress - it’s like she’s going to the junior prom..” The kid has to rack some years up before she can really do what she needs to in order to win this kind of public crapshoot - she has to be able to hammer in a perception of herself.

At the moment, she’s the zebra away from the herd - the easy target. And as the contest ramps up to hard decisions, the easy target is always going to go first.

American Idol 5: The Case for Elliott

This season has produced the most talented top five ever. Now Idol fans are left in an unenviable position. We’ve been asked to choose a winner from a group without clear losers. How will we choose the best when every contestant deserves to win? Stephanie says it’s easy: We can vote for Elliott.

The five remaining contestants are undoubtedly talented and unique, each in their own way. In fact, I’d say with a great deal of certainty that this is the best top five in American Idol history. Thinking back to the first four seasons, eliminations seemed much easier to predict, and the less-talented players were glaringly obvious, whether they were ousted in a timely fashion or not (Josh Gracin, Jasmine Trias, and Scott Savol come to mind, for example).
While certain of the remaining contestants this season have faltered from time to time, not one of them has performed poorly on a regular basis. Earlier in the game, we watched less-talented performers outlast great singers like Mandisa. This is no longer going to pose a problem. With Kellie out the door, it comes down to a matter of personal preference, because not a single sub-par singer remains.

So who is it that the public prefers? It seems like they just can’t decide. At first, Katharine McPhee seemed vulnerable, but last night she found herself in the top two. Taylor Hicks has long seemed like the front-runner, but last night he found himself in third or fourth place. Now it looks like Chris Daughtry is leading the pack, but then again, he was in the bottom two just last week! If I were placing money on the show’s outcome, those would be my top three. But in the back of my mind, I fervently hope that Elliott Yamin will persevere and emerge as the dark horse for the finale.

For the first time ever on American Idol, it would be nearly impossible to pick even one member of the top five who truly doesn’t belong there. We all have our favorite(s), but can also begrudgingly appreciate the greatness of the others. And as the finale approaches, voting for more than one person becomes more of a challenge; in my case, I really, really like all of them.

Elliott is my above and beyond favorite, but that doesn’t mean I want anyone to go home at this point. They’re all just so good. But anyone else I vote for could potentially knock Elliott out of the running. So it’s for that reason that I must pledge my allegiance to Elliott, and only Elliott.
He has some great competition, and it’s more difficult to garner large numbers of votes when so many of the contestants have developed manic fan bases. There’s the “Soul Patrol,” Taylor Hicks’ loyal followers who’ve lovingly dubbed him “Gray Charles” Get it? Like Ray Charles, but Gray… oh, never mind.

Last year, the “rockers,” Bo and Constantine, attracted a whole new set of American Idol viewers. Those people (plus lots and lots of others) are lining up in droves behind Chris Daughtry, who, I’d be willing to bet, is being positioned to win it all.

Katharine McPhee is beautiful, wholesome, and has an amazing and well-trained voice. She appears to be steadily gaining support every week. Then we have Paris Bennett, who, as this season’s last teenager standing, is also the only remaining minority contestant, which might or might not make a difference. We know she is a vocal powerhouse, but is her personality and grating speaking voice holding her back? Only time will tell for sure.

And then there’s Elliott. There are so many reasons why he should win, I’m not sure I know where to start. First, there’s his incredible, goose bump-inducing voice. He’s a genuine, unpretentious, real guy who represents the ‘everyman’ contingent. He’s humble, warm, sincere, and considerate. Notice how he takes the time to give hugs or shoulder-squeezes of encouragement every time he’s sent back to safety on elimination night.

I watch the contestants closely to see how they interact with one another, because I like to see which contestants seem to care about someone besides themselves. A real offender in this respect is Paris. Every time she’s been assured of her safety, she’s smiled triumphantly and, without a backwards glance, marched back to the couch. Elliott is quite the opposite. When he was sent to the center stage with Mandisa, he whispered in her ear, smiled good-naturedly, and held her hand. He didn’t get caught up in the news of his own reprieve the night Bucky went home, either. He seemed more concerned with trying to make the others comfortable, grinning his goofy smile and taking the time to offer hugs before returning to safety. This is a testament to Elliott’s character. He just radiates goodness. And that, compounded by the fact that he is, as Simon said, potentially the best male singer the show has ever seen, means Elliott is the perfect American Idol.

I don’t think the judges ever planned for Elliott to become such an important part of this season. His laid-back personality and less-than-flashy looks kept him pretty far below the radar. We knew he could sing, but no one realized quite how well until the semi-finals. American Idol is a talent competition, sure, but more importantly, it’s good television. That’s why the producers go out of their way to feature the most seemingly marketable contestants. The poor, beautiful country bumpkin; the ruggedly handsome sex symbol; the gray-haired phenomenon with the soulful voice; the sweet little girl with a timeless voice of another era; the noble would-be rocker and dutiful husband; the fresh-faced beauty with the classically trained voice and singing coach-mom… see where I’m going here?

The only remaining performer without an instantly recognizable ‘slogan’ is Elliott. This makes him the true underdog and, perhaps, the person who really deserves to win this competition.

Every other singer in the top five could have a real chance (if they take the right steps) to make it as a singer. They’re good and each of their images will sell. Elliott isn’t as easy to label. He isn’t as commercially marketable. It’s for these reasons that Elliott needs this title more than any other contestant.

So, for those of you who are on the fence, who just can’t decide in whose direction to throw your support, the choice is clear. Vote for Elliott. (Or get onboard the E-Train, as they say.) It’s the right thing to do.

PITT AND JOLIE'S SECURITY SLAMMED BY HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP

LATEST: BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE's security team have been accused of bullying tactics in Namibia, this time by a human rights group in the country. The National Security of Human Rights claims the couple's security team and local police have infringed the rights of locals as they pursue reporters and photographers trying to get a glimpse of the pair ahead of the birth of their first child. A statement claims, "Both the three-member private security personnel of Pitt and Jolie and Namibia police members have conducted unwarranted door-to-door searches of the homes of local residents for paparazzi and other media workers. "We condemn the heavy-handed and brutal tactics selectively directed against local and certain foreign journalists. Three French photographers and one South African snapper were ordered to leave Namibia over the weekend (22-23APR06) after being caught trying to take pictures of Jolie.

PITT AND JOLIE TO TEAM UP FOR ATLAS SHRUGGED?

After years of delays, AYN RAND's famous novel ATLAS SHRUGGED is being made into a feature film starring BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE, according to media reports in the US. Lionsgate Films has bought the rights to the film version of the 1957 novel, considered in many polls to be one of the most influential books in history. According to Hollywood trade paper Variety, the MR AND MRS SMITH co-stars, who are both fans of the Russian novelist, would play the lead roles of DAGNY TAGGART and JOHN GAULT. The story revolves around the economic collapse of the US sometime in the future and espouses Rand's philosophy of objectivism. RAY producers HOWARD and KAREN BALDWIN will adapt the 1,100 page novel into a feature film. CLINT EASTWOOD, ROBERT REDFORD and FAYE DUNAWAY have previously been attached to the project over the years.

JOLIE GETS THE GIGGLES DURING TV CHAT

ANGELINA JOLIE giggled her way through an informed TV chat about the need to educate Africa's children this morning (27APR06) - and blamed her high spirits on her hormones. The seven-months pregnant actress, once famed for her dark image and bizarre self-abusing rituals, was positively giddy as she sat for a chat with US newswoman ANN CURRY for an upcoming DATELINE special. A segment of the interview, which will air on Sunday (30APR06), was shown on breakfast show TODAY. Wearing a headscarf on her head and sporting very little makeup, Jolie glowed as she chatted with Curry about her bid to urge US politicians to help educate young Africans. She said, "More children die under the age of five when the parents are not educated, more people get AIDS when they haven't had an education. Statistics prove that if every child was in school every year 700,000 less people would get AIDS." But the interview got lighter as Curry asked about Jolie's impending birth, prompting the actress to start giggling uncontrollably. She explained that pregnancy has turned her into a very happy lady: "I get hysterical now, like. it'll go on for hours; it's really horrible. It's hormonal." Jolie conducted the Dateline interview in her new Namibian home, where she's preparing for the birth of her first natural child this summer (06).

American Idol: A Night Of Shocks And Thrills

Welcome to Wednesday night on American Idol! Tonight, six become five after one more contestant is eliminated. After having some more time to think about Tuesday night's show, I've decided that this top six is a pretty good one. There are three people of the six that I wouldn't mind seeing win so for now, 50% odds is good enough for me.

Tuesday night's theme was Classic Love Songs. The contestants got help from both Andrea Bocelli and record producer David Foster. They were also all given some tough love as David seems to be a brutally honest guy. I personally think this is exactly what the contestants need at this point of the game. After Tuesday's show, I thought the bottom three would be Paris, Kellie and Katharine with Paris going home. Paris has been in the bottom three before and just doesn't seem to be as popular as some of the others.

Her performances are always good but extremely varied from week to week. I'm not sure if she has a solid, dedicated voting fan base. I went out on a limb by choosing Kellie as another bottom three contestant but I honestly think it could happen. I personally grew tired of her fake dumb blond routine weeks ago but I think America is finally starting to see through it as well. She's always been a decent singer but an incredibly boring performer. Last night was no exception and I think it will finally catch up with her.

As for Katharine, she was actually my favorite of the night which shouldn't surprise most of you. I thought her performance of I Have Nothing was not only her personal best, but it was one of my favorite performances of the whole season. The judges were extremely harsh and critical which of course had me screaming conspiracy. I'm convinced the judges/producers now realize that Kat is a threat for the finale which of course, they did not predict. And we all know how much Simon hates to be wrong. Whether or not that is true, I obviously don't know for sure. I just couldn't think of another explanation because honestly, she wasn't that bad.

Tonight's results show begins the same as always. Dramatic Ryan welcomes us and introduces the judges and contestants. He then tells us that America broke their own record last night as 47.5 million votes were cast. I guess having two lines for each contestant freed up some of the congestion and allowed more people to actually get through. That was not the case for me though. I tried about 10 times to get through for Katharine and could not. My mom also tried to vote for Elliott and I believe Taylor and she could not get through for either of those two as well.

Ryan decides to question the judges about last night's show, specifically some of the more unkind comments. Simon starts by saying that he stands by everything he said except in one instance. He says he feels he was much too critical and overly cruel to… Kat! Aw Simon! You're the man right now! He uses his same old excuse of saying that things always sound much different on TV than they do live but somehow, I think there is probably more to it than that.

After we see the recap of last night's show, we see this week's cheesy Ford commercial. This week's song is Call Me which I'm sure Blondie fully appreciates. Not much to say, same old crap as always. Andrea and David then join Ryan center stage.

After some brief chatting about Andrea's newest tour, Andrea performances a song entitled Because We Believe while being assisted on piano by David. As I said before with some of these artists, I don't want to knock them too much because clearly they are hugely talented.
Andrea's music is not really my style though.

It is finally time for the eliminations.....

'Robotic' Kellie Pickler Voted Off Idol

The ax fell Wednesday night on American Idol hopeful Kellie Pickler – despite judge Simon Cowell's one-time earlier prediction that she'd make it all the way to the final three. "I've definitely learned a lot since I've been here," the 19-year-old North Carolina native said after show host Ryan Seacrest delivered the news.

He also said that 47.5 million votes were cast this week, an all-time high outside of the show's finale tallies. Pickler's exit brings the number of Idol contestants down to five: Paris Bennett, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks and Elliott Yamin. The winner will be named May 25.

On Tuesday, Pickler disappointed Cowell with her rendition of the Righteous Brothers classic "Unchained Melody," which he found "bland. ... You were like a robot," he said. Paula Abdul, tacking a break from her usual gushing, even told Pickler: "I don't see you raising the bar each week. At this point it was about greatness, and I didn't see that in you."

Second lowest in viewer ratings was Bennett, 17, despite passing marks from judges for her soulful take on the Barbra Streisand love song "The Way We Were." Wednesday's elimination show featured a performance by guest coach Andrea Bocelli, who sang "Because We Believe" from his latest album, Amore.

Cowell also used the occasion to comment on the recent reports of an Abdul-Seacrest feud. "Are you two talking yet, by the way?" he asked. "Yes," said Seacrest for the benefit of the audience. "One dysfunctional family right here, ladies and gentleman."

JOLIE BREAKS SILENCE ON RELATIONSHIP WITH PITT

ANGELINA JOLIE is finally breaking her silence about her love affair with BRAD PITT, insisting the intense media scrutiny regarding their relationship makes her "giggle". The MR AND MRS SMITH star spoke with US TV network NBC's ANN CURRY for interviews airing on Thursday (27APR06) on TODAY and Sunday's (30APR06) DATELINE, and claims the curiosity of others is "just kind of funny". She explains, "If (Brad) saw this, he would probably understand why I was laughing. Because I just don't know how to address that kind of thing. "I don't talk about our - my relationship in public. But we also don't talk about it at home. "It's one of those funny things that just happens, and you live your life, and you're a family. But you never actually discuss (it)." The 30-year-old star is currently in Namibia, Africa, where the couple are awaiting the arrival of their newest family member. The TOMB RAIDER star corrected some media reports that her baby is due as early as next week, reportedly announcing that she is not quite eight months pregnant. The actress also claims that the couple knows the sex of the impending arrival, but declines to reveal what it is. Jolie adds, "My life is very full. I'm very proud when I see my children - already MAD (MADDOX), just how he adjusts to different places in the world and different people and his views and the kind of man he's going to be. I'm very lucky."

`American Idol` debunks Prince report

LOS ANGELES, CA, United States (UPI) -- 'American Idol' Executive Producer Ken Warwick has debunked a printed report that Prince was going to perform on the Fox TV talent competition.
'I don`t honestly know' where the rumor came from, Warwick told Zap2it.com. 'It was kind of something that I heard on the daily buzz through the office but was never actually put under my nose.'
The story was first reported by the New Post`s Page Six gossip column.
Warwick said the show never initiated talks with Prince and doesn`t really need to go looking for stars.
'There`s a queue from the record companies, as you can probably imagine because we have 30 million people-plus each week tune in, and so we don`t need to go hunting, as it were,' he said.
'American Idol`s' ratings are up 14 percent over last year, which Warwick attributes to the contestants.
'We`ve got a soul singer, a rock singer, a country singer, a Barbra Streisand (type), we`ve got a crooner,' he said. 'It`s that diversity, I think, that keeps people interested. This year more than ever, the public have really hooked into these kids.'

NAMIBIA DEPORTS JOLIE AND PITT PAPARAZZI

LATEST: The authorities in Namibia have reportedly ordered the deportation of one South African and three French photographers who have been snapping ANGELINA JOLIE and BRAD PITT during their holiday in the country. According to South African newspaper the Sunday Times, the crackdown on the paparazzi has the backing of Namibian Prime Minister NAHAS ANGULA Angula told the media surrounding Pitt and Jolie's heavily guarded holiday retreat, "This lady is expecting. "You guys are harassing her. Why don't you allow her some privacy? Harassment is not allowed in Namibia. If a person says they don't want to be photographed then, of course, that person deserves protection." And an article published in yesterday's edition of the Sunday Times reads, "Three French paparazzi photographers were ordered to leave this week or face arrest. "Others - including a Sunday Times photographer - have been issued letters by the country's Directorate of Immigration sating they are 'prohibited/illegal immigrants' and given 48 hours to pack up and leave or face arrest." Jolie and Pitt issued a statement this weekend (22-23APR06) asking for their privacy to be respected at this delicate stage of the TOMB RAIDER beauty's pregnancy.

Is it the water? Birmingham home to three American Idol finalists

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A long, cool, gulp of this city's water reveals no particular flavor, no telltale tinge that would explain why three men from the area have done (and are doing) so well on "American Idol."

Maybe it's the city's size - big enough for musicians to make a splash, but small enough to keep them from drowning - or it could be the region's gospel influences. Perhaps it's the South's natural saturation of talent. Whatever "it" is, it's probably a combination of several factors, says David Johnson, executive director of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

"There just seems to be an extreme amount of talent in Alabama in general," said Johnson, a former music producer. "I really don't have a good explanation for it, but it really is amazing the talent that's come out of Alabama in the last 100 years."

Birmingham's Idol relationship began when then 25-year-old Ruben Studdard beat out Clay Aiken in 2002 to become the country's second Idol. Next came Helena resident Bo Bice who finished second to American Idol winner Carrie Underwood last year.

Now Birmingham's silver-haired Taylor Hicks is in the top six, garnering both votes and loads of attention for his hair as much as his soulful blues singing.

That makes three Idol finalists from Birmingham in the past five seasons - four finalists if you count Diana Degarmo, who was born in Birmingham but moved to Snellville, Ga. at age 3. She finished second to season three winner Fantasia Barrino in 2004.

"I think there really must be something in the water," Buffalo Wild Wings manager Chris West said after a recent watch-party for Hicks at the Hoover restaurant. "We've had Ruben, Bo, everybody here is just really fired up about it. It shows there's a lot of talent here."

And, most are quick to point out, that talent has been in Birmingham, in Alabama, in the South, long before Idol judge Simon Cowell & Co. ever dreamed of the TV talent show.

Johnson said it's great that Alabama talent is being recognized on a national level and Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau spokeswoman Dilcy Hilley agreed.

"It does show what amazing musical roots we have in our area ...," Hilley said. "There's blues and rock-and-roll and especially jazz was such a part of this city and I think it's only natural that there's a great pool of talent here today as there has been for decades."

Entertainment greats from Nat "King" Cole and Nell Carter to Hank Williams and Emmy Lou Harris all called Alabama home and the state's contributions to soul and blues rank right up there with its Southern counterparts.

The region's relationship with religion has no doubt contributed to its musical inclinations, with children often singing in their church choirs, observers say.

Studdard and Bice both sang in choirs as children and that's where her son first got a taste of performing, Emily Studdard said.

"It was very important because it gave him an audience," she said. "It came from a place where he could build his confidence ... he could get constructive criticism and feel comfortable there. The church was very important."

Also, there's often an expectation among Southern families that children would partake in music, said Frank Adams, director of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

"Back then, everybody in the family had to do something musical," he said during a recent tour at the hall, a clarinet clutched in his right hand. "(You had to) play an instrument, sing, something - else they'll talk about you. They'll say, 'What's wrong with her?'"

Before auditioning for Idol, Studdard was in the group Just a Few Cats and Bice was the lead singer for SugarMoney. Hicks has been touring for several years with the Taylor Hicks Band, his father, Brad Hicks, said.

"I think that Bo and Ruben and Taylor were all serious entertainers and really knew that they wanted to do this for the rest of their lives," the elder Hicks said. "I think all three of those guy are really hard workers and that's made a difference."

Emily Studdard and Bice's mother, Nancy Downes, both grew up singing in church and Downes was part of a gospel group called the Singing Jays.

She recalled how Bo (short for nickname Bogart - his real name's Harold) started singing at age three and would delight when people gave him change for his trouble.

"A quarter was just awesome," she said laughing. "He would just sing and sing and sing for a quarter."

Studdard has set up a foundation that awards college scholarships and recently announced the "The Music Alternative Project," a program aimed at keeping young people away from gangs by introducing them to behind-the-scenes aspects of the music industry.

Bice, who moved from Helena to Nashville after the show, let Hurricane Katrina evacuees stay in his Helena home as long as they needed to. He also recently donated the outfit his grandmother made for him to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

That Southern charm and hospitality has probably helped endear them to fans, Johnson said.
"They're more `people-people' - they're from the South," he said. "It's just the upbringing. You're raised in the South and we're friendly and we're nice and we like people. We like to show that appreciation back."

The die-hard Southern pride that makes Alabamians cry out "Roll Tide" and "War Eagle" has crossed over to the singing arena and bolstered Birmingham's hold in the competition, said Charnel Wright, a WBRC-FOX 6 NEWS reporter who's been organizing Idol watch parties since Studdard was on the show.

"When you have people who start talking about it like they do games at either Auburn or Alabama, then you know it's big," she said. "You get these people - even these hardcore sports buffs - saying 'Taylor did well this week, but I think Ace should be off,' and these are the same guys talking about Brodie Croyle and the NFL draft - people are treating it as if it were sports."

Having the solid backing of your home state helps on a show where the winner is chosen by the number of votes that are called in. While the excitement for Studdard and Hicks has been phenomenal, Helena's enthusiasm bordered on fanatical, Wright said.

"We started calling it Bolena," she joked.

Also working to their advantage is Birmingham's location and size, said Mark Harrelson and Courtney Hayden, both producers at Boutwell Studios in Homewood where Hicks cut a record about a year ago.

"Birmingham has given them that freedom to develop, I think," Hayden said. "If you were living in Philly and you were trying to break into New York, you want to be more like New York guys."

MADONNA 'SHARED LESBIAN LOVER WITH JOLIE'

MADONNA reportedly enjoyed a lesbian affair with gay model JENNY SHIMIZU - the same woman who had a fling with Hollywood beauty ANGELINA JOLIE. The former Calvin Klein model tells British newspaper News Of The World, the HUNG UP hitmaker selected her for a girl-on-girl romance from a casting video. Shimizu admits, "From the age of 14 I'd watched her videos and thought, 'I'm going to have sex with that gorgeous woman one day.' "And that night my fantasy came true - again and again and again. "For hours we explored each other's bodies, kissing every inch. Far from the sex-crazed woman many think she is, I found her a very gentle woman. "Madonna wanted someone she could trust to call when she wanted pleasuring right there and then. "I was her secret 'booty call' available any time of the day or night for secret sex sessions." Shimizu is now dating British TV presenter REBECCA LOOS - who hit the headlines in 2004 when she claimed she enjoyed an extra-marital affair with soccer ace DAVID BECKHAM.
